The Club That Gains Most From Thin Air and Loses Most Without It
A driver fitted on Reno numbers alone is a driver that will embarrass you on the first trip out of the valley. It is also the club where a bad fitting is easiest to hide behind one good swing.

Percentage Error Times a Big Number
Every club gains carry in thin air by roughly the same percentage. The driver simply has the largest number to multiply. A golfer who carries 240 in the valley is carrying about 225 at sea level, and that fifteen-yard hole appears at exactly the wrong moment — on an unfamiliar course, on a hole they were told plays 270 to the corner.
Worse, the fix people reach for is a loft change, and a loft change made for the wrong reason usually ruins the club at home. If your driver launches beautifully at 4,505 feet and you strengthen it to chase yards on a trip, you have traded fifty rounds a year for four.
The session handles this by settling on a configuration that has an acceptable launch window across the whole range, not an optimal one at a single air density. Optimal at one point is fragile. Acceptable across a band is what actually holds up.
We Judge It on the Ugly Swings
Anyone can find a driver that produces one enormous number. The interesting question is what the club does on a heel strike at eleven in the morning when it is thirty-eight degrees out and you have not warmed up.
So the sample includes those. We do not remove a swing because it felt bad. We remove the two longest and the two shortest, which is a symmetrical rule, and then read the middle of what remains. A head that keeps ball speed on a strike three-quarters of an inch toward the heel is worth more over a season than a head that is two miles per hour faster dead centre.
The Four Variables, In This Order
1. Head
Face curvature and centre-of-gravity placement decide how much your mishits cost you. This is settled first because everything downstream depends on it, and because it is the variable with the least marketing noise attached once you are looking at your own dispersion chart rather than a brochure.
2. Shaft
Weight first, then bend profile, then flex designation last. Flex letters are not standardised between manufacturers and are close to meaningless as a starting point. Weight is measurable and has a far bigger effect on where your strike lands.
3. Length
Most stock drivers are longer than most golfers can control. Cutting half an inch typically costs about two yards of theoretical distance and buys a meaningful improvement in strike location, which usually more than pays it back. We measure this rather than assume it.
4. Settings
Loft sleeve and any moveable weight, adjusted last, once everything else is fixed. This is the stage most shops start at, which is why so many people leave with a well-tuned version of the wrong club.
Into the Fan, Then Out the Door
Any candidate that survives the bay gets hit into the fan and, weather permitting, outside. Down-valley wind in the afternoon is the normal condition here, not an edge case. A high, soft flight that gains six yards in still air can give back fifteen into a headwind, and you would rather find that out in the lot behind our building than on the eighth tee.

This golfer bought a shaft and kept the head. The three extra yards from the new head did not justify the price against an unchanged dispersion, and we said so. Two seasons later he is still playing the same combination.

High-Desert Fairways Do Not Give You a Cushion
Golfers who learned the game on soft, thick turf develop a fairway wood technique that relies on the ball sitting up slightly. Our fairways from May onward do not do that. The ball sits on top of firm ground with almost no grass underneath it, and the margin for a slightly heavy strike disappears.
That changes what a good fairway wood looks like. Sole width, leading edge height and the amount of camber front to back matter more here than head speed or the shaft's bend profile. A shallow head with a wide, rounded sole will skid through a tight lie. A deep-faced tour-style head with a narrow sole will dig, and when it digs on concrete-hard ground the result is not a fat shot, it is a bounce and a thin one.
How Many Do You Actually Need?
The honest answer for most golfers here is one, sometimes zero. At 4,505 feet a well-struck three-wood carries far enough that a five-wood and a three-wood frequently land inside ten yards of each other, and both of them overlap the longest hybrid.
We test this before we test anything else. If the second wood in your bag turns out to be a duplicate, the session is over in forty minutes and you have a free slot for something that scores. That is a better outcome than a beautifully fitted club nobody needed.
Three Lies, Not One
Firm mat
The control condition. Everyone hits their best fairway wood shots from here, which is exactly why we do not stop at this stage.
Bare-lie plate
A low-friction surface with almost no give, standing in for August fairway. This is where sole geometry separates candidates that looked identical two minutes earlier.
Real ground, when possible
Out the back on a decent day. Not a range, but eighty yards of clear space is enough to watch the club interact with actual dirt and see whether the divot pattern matches what the numbers implied.
What Usually Changes
Lie angle is the single most common adjustment on this session and the least expected. A fairway wood that is two degrees too flat for a golfer's delivery produces exactly the low right miss that people blame on the shaft. Bending it costs forty-five dollars and takes ten minutes.
After that, in rough order of frequency: a loft increase, a shorter length, a heavier shaft, and only then a new head. New heads are the fourth most common answer, not the first, and anyone telling you otherwise on a fairway wood is guessing.
Where Your Long Irons Stop Being Worth Carrying
There is a specific club number at which your long irons stop producing a usable descent angle. Thin air moves that number, and moves it back again the week you fly somewhere flat.

It Is a Landing Angle Question, Not a Distance Question
Almost everyone frames this wrongly. They compare how far a four-iron goes with how far a hybrid goes, find them similar, and conclude that either club would do. Distance is not what decides it.
What decides it is the angle the ball arrives at, because that determines whether it stops on a green. A long iron struck by a golfer with moderate speed arrives shallow. On our midsummer greens, shallow means the ball releases twenty yards past the flag regardless of how much spin the scorecard says you have.
A hybrid launches higher and lands steeper at the same carry distance. That is the entire argument, and it is measurable in the bay in about twenty minutes. We put your long irons and a range of hybrid lofts through the same block and read the descent angles side by side.
Altitude Complicates the Crossover
Thin air flatters long irons. A four-iron that produces a marginal descent angle at sea level produces a slightly better one at 4,505 feet, simply because the extra carry buys more time in the air and a longer descent.
The trap is obvious once you see it. Golfers here keep long irons that work at home, then find them unplayable on a coastal trip — not because they lost distance, but because they lost the last few degrees of landing angle that were making the club functional in the first place.
So the crossover gets calculated twice. If a four-iron only works at 4,505 feet and you play four rounds a year somewhere flat, that is fine and we will tell you so. If you play half your golf on trips, the answer changes.
Hybrids Are Not All the Same Shape
Iron-like heads
Compact, shallower face, more workable, less forgiving. Suits golfers who came from long irons and want the ball flight raised without the club feeling foreign at address.
Wood-like heads
Deeper, wider soled, more forgiving off firm turf, harder to hit low deliberately. Usually the better answer for golfers who reach for this club out of thin rough.
Shaft length is the hidden variable
Manufacturers build hybrids at wildly different lengths and stock ones are often longer than the golfer can strike consistently. Cutting a half inch and correcting swingweight fixes more hybrid problems than changing the head does.
Watching for Doubling
A hybrid that carries the same distance as your five-wood is a wasted slot, and it happens constantly because both clubs get bought separately, years apart, without anyone plotting them together.
Part of this session is simply hitting everything from the four-iron up to the driver and marking where the carry bands sit. Sometimes the recommendation is a hybrid. Sometimes it is removing a wood. Occasionally it is that your bag is already correct and the money is better spent on wedges.
A Set Is One Instrument, Not Seven Separate Ones
Fitting irons individually produces seven clubs that each work and a set that does not. The useful measurement is the spacing between them, and the spacing has to survive an elevation change.

Can You Tell Two Adjacent Clubs Apart?
That is the whole test. If your eight-iron and your seven-iron produce overlapping carry patterns, then on the course you are guessing between them, and no amount of shaft technology fixes a guess.
Whether they overlap depends on two things: how far apart their medians sit, and how wide each pattern is. Most fitting attention goes to the first and almost none to the second, which is backwards. A golfer with tight patterns can carry ten clubs spaced nine yards apart and use every one. A golfer with wide patterns spaced the same way owns four clubs that are functionally identical.
We measure both, plot them, and show you where the overlaps are. Sometimes the answer is a loft change. Sometimes it is dropping a club from the set entirely and widening the gaps. Occasionally it is that the set is fine and the problem is a strike pattern that no equipment change will tighten.
What the Static Audit Usually Finds
Before a ball is hit, every iron you brought goes on the bench. Loft, lie, length, swingweight, grip size, shaft frequency. It takes fifteen minutes and it changes the session about a third of the time.
- Lofts drifting one to three degrees off the stamped number, usually from bag wear on cast heads
- One club in the middle of the set bent flat or upright from a cart rack or a root
- Grips that were replaced piecemeal over years, now three different diameters in one set
- A replacement shaft installed at the wrong length, throwing swingweight out by four points
- Grooves worn smooth on the two clubs that get hit most, changing spin against the rest of the set
Every one of those produces a gapping problem that looks like a fitting problem. Fixing them costs bench time and no new equipment, which is why the audit comes first.
Blended Sets Are Normal Here, Not Exotic
The long end of an iron set is where most golfers in this valley lose the plot. Thin air flatters a four-iron enough that it feels playable on a warm afternoon and disappears completely in April at the coast.
Blending — a more forgiving head in the long irons, a more compact one in the scoring clubs, matched for length and lie so the transition is invisible — is the most common recommendation we make on this session. It is not a compromise. It is what the numbers keep saying.
Then We Convert the Ladder
Once the configuration is settled, every club's carry median goes into the three-column format. This is the moment people usually go quiet, because the sea-level column shows their four-iron and five-iron collapsing into each other while their nine-iron and pitching wedge stay comfortably apart.
That is not a defect in the set. It is arithmetic. Correcting proportionally compresses the top of the ladder more than the bottom, and knowing it in advance is the difference between a good vacation round and a confusing one.

Identical medians. Golfer A's clubs are genuinely distinct. Golfer B's overlap almost completely, and adding a club to that set makes the problem worse rather than better. B left with two fewer irons, wider gaps and a wedge session booked.
Forty Yards Nobody Measures, on Ground That Never Softens
The band under your pitching wedge is where most rounds are decided and where almost nobody has real numbers. It is also the part of the bag most affected by how firm our fairways get.

Effective Bounce Is Not the Number Stamped on the Sole
The figure printed on a wedge assumes the club arrives at a particular shaft lean and the ground yields a particular amount. Change either and the effective bounce changes with it.
Our ground yields very little for five months of the year. A wedge with twelve degrees of stamped bounce behaves like a much higher-bounce club on August turf, because the sole never sinks in. The leading edge sits up, and the result is the thin shot that flies the green — not from a bad swing, but from equipment that was chosen for a different surface.
Golfers who move here from wetter climates usually arrive with too much bounce and cannot work out why their short game has fallen apart. It is the single most common finding on this session.
Grind Matters More Than Bounce on Firm Turf
Heel and toe relief lets you open the face without the leading edge rising off the ground. On soft turf you can get away without it because the sole sinks. On hard ground you cannot, and a wedge with a full sole becomes genuinely difficult to use out of a tight lie with the face open.
We test candidates from three surfaces: a firm mat, a bare-lie plate, and the practice bunker sand we keep in a tray at the back. What survives all three is what goes on the sheet.
Gapping Under the Pitching Wedge
Modern iron sets have strengthened lofts to the point where the pitching wedge in a game-improvement set can be 42 degrees or stronger. If your sand wedge is 56, that is a fourteen-degree hole with, in this air, something close to forty yards inside it.
Two wedges cannot cover forty yards without partial swings, and partial swings are the least repeatable thing most amateurs do. So we measure your actual pitching wedge loft first, then work down from it in even steps rather than assuming a standard progression.
Worth knowing: thin air widens wedge gaps too, just by less. A ten-yard gap at sea level is about eleven here. Over four wedges that adds up to a club's worth of extra spacing to account for.
Partial Swings Get Measured Too
Full-swing wedge numbers are the least useful data in the bag, because you rarely hit a full wedge. So about a third of the session is spent on controlled partial swings at two reference positions, recorded the same way as everything else.
Most golfers discover their three-quarter swing with one wedge produces the same carry as a full swing with the next one down, which means one of the two clubs is redundant and the other is doing double duty. That is a useful thing to learn in a bay rather than over water.
The Only Club Where Altitude Does Nothing and Everything Else Does
Thin air has no opinion about a twelve-foot putt. That makes this the one session where the whole hour belongs to geometry, green speed and what your hands do when a putt matters.

Length Is Decided by Where Your Eyes Sit, Not by Your Height
The chart on the back of a putter box maps height to length, and it is wrong often enough that we stopped consulting it years ago. Two golfers who both stand five foot eleven can want putters two inches apart, because posture at address has far more to do with hip mobility and habit than with the tape measure.
So we do it the other way around. You take your normal stance over a ball with your own putter, we drop a plumb line from the bridge of your nose, and we note where it lands relative to the ball. Then we hand you shafts in half-inch steps until the line falls where it needs to for your stroke shape. Only then does a number get written down.
Roughly one golfer in three is playing a putter more than an inch too long for the posture they actually adopt, usually because they bought it standing straighter in a shop than they ever stand on a green. The symptom is a hosel-side strike and a pull that shows up under pressure.
Lie Angle Shows Up in the Start Line, Not the Feel
A putter sitting toe-up or heel-up at impact points the face somewhere other than where the shaft says. It is a small effect on a three-footer and a large one on a lag putt, and almost nobody feels it happening — they just quietly aim further right or left over a season until the compensation is invisible to them.
We read this off a sole tape and a slow-motion capture rather than by eye. If the sole is contacting on the toe and your start line drifts right, the fix is two degrees on the bench, and it costs less than a sleeve of balls.
Toe Hang Should Match the Stroke You Already Have
The face-balanced versus toe-hang argument gets framed as a matter of taste. It is not. It is a question of how much your face naturally rotates through the stroke, which we can measure in about four minutes with a marker dot and a camera.
A golfer whose face opens and closes a lot through the stroke is fighting a face-balanced head all day. A golfer with almost no rotation gets pushed around by a heavy toe hang. Matching the two is the single change that produces the most immediate improvement in this session, and it frequently costs nothing because the right head is already somewhere in the rack.
Loft at Impact, Not Loft on the Sticker
Every putter is stamped with a static loft, usually three degrees. What matters is the loft the face presents at the moment of contact, which depends on where the ball sits in your stance and how much forward press you use.
Deliver too little and the ball is driven down into the turf and has to climb out, which on our firm summer greens produces a hop you can see from the side. Deliver too much and it takes off, floats, and lands short. We record the number and then adjust the club rather than asking you to rebuild a stroke that otherwise works.
Two Green Speeds, Because You Play Two Green Speeds
The putting strip in the back bay is adjustable, and we roll every candidate at both ends of it. One setting matches what the valley municipal courses run through the summer. The other matches the noticeably slower, grainier surfaces the lake resorts have in early season when the greens are still waking up.
A head that gives a golfer excellent distance control on quick greens can leave them consistently short on slow ones. Knowing which of your two home courses your putter suits, and by how much, is a genuinely useful thing to have written down.
