Ask around a valley clubhouse how much further the ball goes here and you will get a number. Usually "about ten percent", occasionally "a club", and from at least one person in every group, "twenty yards". The first two are roughly in the right area. The third one is where the trouble starts.
Twenty yards is not a correction. It is a correction for one specific club, misapplied to thirteen others, and applying it that way will put a hole in a bag faster than anything else a golfer can do without spending money.
The mechanism, briefly
Air at 4,505 feet is thinner than air at sea level. Less air means less drag on a ball in flight, and less drag means the ball keeps more of the speed it started with for longer. It also means less lift, but drag wins the argument, so the net effect is more carry.
Crucially, drag acts on the ball for the whole time it is in the air. A shot that spends seven seconds in flight is being helped for seven seconds. A shot that spends four seconds in flight is helped for four. That is why the benefit scales with how far the shot was going in the first place, and why it has to be expressed as a percentage.
What that does to a bag

Read the last column downward. The flat correction is roughly right for the driver, because that is the club it was derived from, and it gets worse every step down the bag until the sand wedge is wrong by twelve yards. Twelve yards on a sand wedge is not an error, it is a different club.
Now run it the other way, which is the version that ruins holidays. A golfer takes their valley yardages, subtracts a flat eighteen for a trip to the coast, and arrives at wedge numbers that are twelve yards short. Every approach comes up in the front bunker and they spend four rounds convinced they have lost their swing.
Think in percentages. Convert each club separately. Only turn it into yards at the very last step.
The one that actually costs strokes
The gapping consequence is worse than either of the above and much less obvious. Look at the fifth and seventh rows in the table. At sea level those two clubs are eighteen yards apart. In valley air they are nineteen apart. Small change — but it happens between every pair of clubs in the bag, and the changes accumulate differently at each end.
A set spaced evenly at sea level arrives here spaced slightly wider at the top and almost unchanged at the bottom. For most golfers that is tolerable. For a golfer who already had a soft spot between their longest iron and their shortest wood, the valley makes it into a proper hole, and it is a hole they carry around for years without ever identifying what happened.
That is the single most common finding in a full ledger session here. Not a bad club. A gap that only exists in this air.
The number is not exactly seven percent for everybody
Worth saying plainly, because it is the sort of figure that gets repeated as gospel. Seven percent is a reasonable working figure for a mid-iron on a normal afternoon. Your own figure depends on your launch conditions, and a high-launching, high-spin ball flight gains slightly more from thin air than a low, penetrating one does, because it spends longer up there being helped.
Temperature moves it as well. A dawn round in October and a two o'clock round in July are meaningfully different air, and in this valley the daily swing is large enough that the difference is not academic.
So the honest version is: it is a percentage, it is roughly seven, and it is worth measuring rather than assuming if you are going to build a season around it.
What to actually do
Get carry numbers for every club, in one place, on one day, with the conditions written down. Convert each one separately. Write the results on something you can read on a tee box. Then stop doing arithmetic on the golf course, which is the part of all this that most reliably costs shots.
None of that requires a fitting studio. It requires somewhere with a radar unit and a willingness to be systematic about it. We happen to do exactly that for a living, but the method matters more than where you get it done.
