Seven Stages, and None of Them Are a Surprise
Nothing about this is proprietary or clever. It is ordinary measurement done in a fixed order, written down as it happens, so that the result can be checked by anyone including you.
Allow the full session length. Sessions that finish early usually do so because the answer was "your clubs are fine", which is a legitimate outcome and still comes with the sheet.
-
The conditions log
Before a club comes out of the bag, someone writes down the bay temperature, the barometric pressure from the studio station, the relative humidity and which ball you will be hitting. That header sits at the top of your sheet forever.
It matters because a carry median without conditions attached cannot be compared to anything later. If you come back in eighteen months and the numbers have moved, we need to know whether you changed or the day did.
-
The static audit
Everything you brought goes on the bench first. Length, lie, loft, swingweight, grip size and shaft frequency get measured and recorded club by club. It takes about fifteen minutes for a full set.
This step finds problems roughly a third of the time before a single ball is struck. Bent lie angles from a cart bag, a grip two sizes too small on one club, a set where the six-iron is somehow a half-inch short. You cannot fit around faults you have not found.
-
The baseline block
You hit your own club, the one you came to talk about, for eighteen recorded swings. No coaching, no adjustments, no suggestions. This is the number every later comparison is measured against.
Two longest and two shortest come out of the sample. What remains gives a carry median and, more importantly, a spread. The spread is usually the more interesting figure and almost nobody arrives expecting that.
-
One variable, then the next
Head, shaft, length, weight, lie. Changed individually, tested for a block, recorded. If two things change at once and the result improves, you have learned nothing you can act on.
It is slower than the fittings people are used to, and it is the entire reason the sheet is worth keeping. Every line on it has an experiment behind it.
-
The fan and the door
Any configuration that survives the bay gets tested into moving air, and where the weather allows, outside through the roll-up door. High spin and a tall flight look excellent in still air at seventy degrees. The valley does not stay still at seventy degrees.
This stage eliminates about one candidate in four. It is the closest thing we have to a reality check, and it is why we do not run sessions with the door bolted shut on a good day.
-
The elevation conversion
Once the winning configuration is settled, its carry medians get converted into the other two columns. Valley numbers are what we measured. Lake numbers and sea-level numbers come out of an air density model that we recalibrate twice a year against real rounds played by people who report back.
The conversion is proportional, so the driver moves further than the wedge. Seeing that laid out is the moment most golfers understand why their vacation rounds have been going badly.
-
The sheet, and a plain-language summary
You leave with one page per club group: current spec, recommended spec, carry in three columns, and a sentence in normal English explaining what changed and why. If the recommendation is to keep what you own, it says that.
Build quotes are separate and never appear on the sheet. We do not want the recommendation and the invoice to be the same document.
What a Finished Line Looks Like
This is a real row from an iron sheet, anonymised. Five clubs from the same set, showing why the elevation columns are not decoration.
| Club | Valley 4,505 ft | Lake 6,250 ft | Sea level | Spread |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 iron | 191 | 198 | 179 | 19 |
| 6 iron | 180 | 187 | 169 | 18 |
| 7 iron | 168 | 174 | 158 | 16 |
| 8 iron | 157 | 163 | 148 | 15 |
| 9 iron | 145 | 150 | 137 | 13 |
Read the right-hand column and the point makes itself: the elevation error on a five-iron is larger than the gap between a five-iron and a six-iron. Apply one flat correction to the whole set and you have just reordered your own bag.
Put a Date Against It
Tell us which part of the bag is annoying you and we will tell you which session answers it.
